New Century Scholarship Program
The New Century Scholarship Program was created by the 1999 Utah Legislature to provide scholarship opportunities to Utah students who complete, with a cumulative 3.0 GPA, the requirements of an associate degree, its equivalent, or the approved math and science curriculum at a state institution of higher education by September 1 of the year that they graduate from a Utah high school. It is important that students, parents, and counselors understand the requirements of the scholarship and for interested students to begin planning their high school and college curriculum early (7th or 8th grade).Completing an associate degree or the math and science curriculum while attending high school is a challenge and is not a beneficial curriculum choice for every student. Students interested in qualifying for the New Century Scholarship should have a good understanding of the different types of associate degrees offered by institutions and their completion requirements. It is also important to note that each institution has a different course outline for the associate degree programs. Whichever path you choose, it is advisable to select the institution at which you would like to receive your associate degree or complete the approved math and science curriculum as early as possible and contact that school for detailed information on course instruction.
Scholarship awards equal 75% of an eligible student's tuition costs for up to two years (60 credit hours) at any of Utah's state-operated institutions of higher education offering baccalaureate programs. Scholarships used at Brigham Young University and Westminster College will equal 75% of the average tuition costs at the state operated institutions. The scholarship may be canceled if the student fails to maintain a B average for any two consecutive semesters. Please refer to the Questions and Answers for additional program information.
