College Q&As

Q.

How do international students apply for admission to a college or university in Utah?

A.

Since each campus may have different admission requirements, international students must contact the campus they wish to attend for application procedures. Usually, these procedures include submitting an international student admission application form, an application processing fee, proof of financial support, proof of English proficiency (TOEFL), official transcripts, and diplomas/certificates sent directly from institutions the student attended to the campus in sealed envelopes (accompanied by exact literal English translations), and possibly additional application forms for the department to which the student is applying, letters of recommendation, portfolios, auditions, and other tests (e.g., GMAT, GRE, MAT). Graduate applicants should check with their graduate departments on each campus for additional requirements.

Q.

When should international applicants turn in applications for admission and other required documents?

A.

International applicants should check with each campus for application deadlines. On each campus, some major departments may have earlier application deadlines than others. Applicants should apply at the beginning of the application cycle to allow ample time for processing. Specific information is available for each campus in the Campus Tours section of the College Campus Tools module.

Q.

What is the TOEFL requirement?

A.

Most institutions require international students to have a TOEFL score of 500 (173 on the online version) or better on the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Some campuses may require a score higher than 500 for graduate students. Some campuses will allow international students to attend with low or no TOEFL score if the student enrolls in an ELSC (Internexus) studies program. More information is available in the Campus Tours section of the College Campus Tools module.

Q.

What are the admission requirements for an international student?

A.

Utah uses separate requirements and application filing dates in the admission of foreign students. For this purpose, foreign students include those who hold U.S. visas as students, exchange visitors, or other nonimmigrant classifications. Verification of English proficiency (see the TOEFL section of this page), financial resources, and academic performance are all important considerations. Official academic records from foreign institutions must be on file before registration for the first term and, if not written in English, must be accompanied by certified English translations. More information can be found in the Campus Tours section of the College Campus Tools module.
